On the Dignity and Vocation of Women
John Paul II, Pope
John Paul II’s innovative document on the dignity of woman
These reflections on a subject of constant human and Christian concern, (first published in 1988), give thanks for the mystery of woman, for each and every woman, and especially for all the manifestations of the feminine genius which have appeared in the course of history, in the midst of all peoples and nations. They give thanks for all the charisms, which the Holy Spirit distributes to women in the history of the People of God, for all the victories which the Church owes to their faith, hope and charity, and for all the fruits of their feminine holiness.
In this watershed document Pope John Paul II explored and advanced the theme of the meaning and dignity of being a woman, as distinct from being a man, thus making it possible to understand the greatness of their dignity and vocation and of their active presence in the Church and in society.
